Happy Tuesday! 👋

Last week I shared one of the biggest things Yellowstone reminded me.

That the world is so much bigger than the things that consume my everyday life.

But as we drove home, I realized there was another lesson tucked inside this trip.

One that actually explains why I spend so much time planning our family vacations.

It might surprise you.

I don't plan because I want every minute scheduled.

I don't plan because I expect everything to go perfectly.

In fact, if you've followed me for very long, you know that's the opposite of how we travel. 😄

I plan because planning gives me the freedom to be flexible.

When I already know where we're sleeping each night...

When I've researched the area enough to know what we don't want to miss...

When I have a loose plan for each day...

I'm not spending the trip wondering what to do next or stressing about logistics.

Instead...

I can pull over to take a picture with a quirky roadside attraction that makes us all laugh.

I can say, "Sure, let's check it out," when we pass a billboard for a candy shop that's only 10 minutes off our route.

I can stop at an overlook simply because the view is too beautiful to drive past.

I can linger a little longer while the boys throw rocks into a river because no one is watching the clock.

Those are the moments they still talk about long after we've unpacked.

Ironically, having a plan is what allows us to let go of the plan.

Some of our favorite family memories happened because we were willing to say yes to something we hadn't planned.

And the funny part?

We probably would have kept driving if we'd skipped the planning altogether.

Instead, we had the flexibility to pull over, explore, and enjoy the moment.

That's become one of my favorite ways to travel.

Prepared enough to feel confident.

Flexible enough to enjoy the unexpected.

I think there's something really freeing about that.

Not just on vacation...

But in life, too. 💛

Over the next few weeks, I'm excited to share exactly how we planned our Yellowstone trip, where we stayed, what I'd do again, and what I'd change. My hope is that it saves you hours of research and gives you the confidence to plan a trip that's memorable without feeling overwhelming.
